Underground Railroad Bicycle Route

While in Clermont County, Ohio (in the Cincinnati area) I took a short detour to see just one small portion of the Underground Railroad Bike Route along the Little Miami River. Clermont County played a critical role on the Underground Railroad in the early 19th century, given its location across the river from the slave-holding state of Kentucky.

I had heard about the Underground Railroad Bike Route project before leaving on my Route 50 trip -- and interviewed two of the individuals who worked on developing it. It's a fascinating undertaking that combines history, heritage tourism, recreation, and health.
